Mylar Bags: Half-Ounce Structural and Filling 14 Gram Recommendations.
A bag weighing 14 grams holds a sufficient amount of product to be an important design consideration. It is the contents that will open the gusset, push on side seals and either keep the pack standing, slumps or rounds in shelf. The zipper too has to be unzipped to the load the product to be filled and worked without mess.
Dimensions can still not be determined by weight alone. An entire pound of bloomy flower can require additional interior room compared to a smaller product. Fill, construct the bottom, side panels, film and closure as a package.
Convert Product Volume to Package Load.
Take initial and large volumes without compression 14g. Note the shape distribution, stem points and the product settling. Place the piece in candidate pouches and record the location of the touching point with the base and sidewalls.
The only type of design load is downward weight. The product is placed in corners during the transportation and it has recurring pressure points during manual handling. A bag that is very full can make the zipper and upper seals to baggy. A bag is excessive and the weight of the product may vary and collide with the structure.
Pick a target fill envelope: target volume minimum, realistically maximum and usual. The pouch must not be approved until the three are working and the normal fill is normal.
Compare High-Capacity Pouch Architectures
Flat pouch
A larger flat pouch is simple and space-consuming in cartons and may convert to a pillow-shaped and requires support on a shelf. It can be attached as hanging or bin display provided the front panel can still be read.
Stand-up pouch
When there is a balance between dimensions, film stiffness and fill, a bottom gusset makes a presentation that is stable. Too much product will not open the base and too much product will round the base and move the front artwork.
Flat-bottom bag
The bottom of the panels and the side panels are a box-like structure and larger branding mechanism. It can boost presentation of a superior half-ounce SKU, yet its extra framework and panels should be business evidently.
Selecting architecture: not on the basis of a photo in the catalog, testing display, filling and case packing.
Assist with Base and Side Seals.
The weight and impacts on the product are exerted on the bottom and during handling. The main body is controlled by side seals. Check seal width, geometry of the forming and the laminate recommended by the supplier of the product. Make sure that artwork and coatings are compatible with the sealing process.
Run filled drop and compression tests which are appropriate to the distribution plan. Inspect not only the easily visible leaks, but also channeling, wrinkles, delamination and seal-edge damage. A pouch which comes out intact after empty handling has not been tested to perform at 14g.
When filling, be sure that when opening its gusset does open and does not get product stuck. It has to be based on the natural and not on the operators having to re-shape every bag.
Choose Film to be Stiff and Puncture Resistant.
Stiffness aids a bigger pouch to show its panels, however an excessively rigid laminate might be hard to open and deliver a crease. A highly pliable film is able to hang slack and permit focused stem pressure. Sensation, piercing strength, flex life, sealability and barrier.
Order the whole film framework and the correct details. Thick, and high barrier are not synonymous. The barrier requirements are based on oxygen, moisture, aroma, light and desired shelf life. The real construction needs to be also thought of in terms of product-contact appropriateness and migration of the adhesive or ink.
Test matte, gloss, kraft-like or metallic appearance after the choice of the functional structure. Surface treatment should not be done at the expense of variable coding and information required.
Install Zipper on the Top of the Product Load.
Draw a top line up to a maximum of the zipper and leave a top seal. The consumer should be able to open the closure and the operators to fill and close them. The friction between products and the zipper may result in reduced effectiveness of alignment and reclosure.
The active closure route in child-resistant formats must be the same as the approved route that is used in the market and validated. The labeling should be easily understandable on the package kept.
Check each side of the zipper, at which points of incompleteness can start. Simulate transportation and recycle the filled pouch, settling can move the product to the closure area.
Create a Fill Mouth in Real Life.
Half-ounce sizes have to have an opening that admits the maximum size pieces it is likely to hold. Hold the funnel, scoop or machine of filling so that the pouch mouth fits in. In cases where the operators are required to squeeze the product through a tiny aperture, then the line speed and product quality can be affected.
Conduct a trial run production and record cycle time, spillage, product that comes in contact with the zipper and rework. Take into account the empty pouches that are fed into the operator or machine. Opening consistency can be affected by film stiffness, alignment at the top and bottom edges of the film.
When filling, verify the weight of the brand after filling in the net weight, wash the seal area and apply the approved top seal. Two functions that are to be checked are the top seal and the zipper.
Settle when Shipping.
Product can be lower in the pouch in case transportation. That may alter the shape of the front-panel and provide a more spacious area on the top. It is also able to focus the load on the bottom and enable the upper body to bend.
Emulate desired pack-out. The filled pouches are to be placed in the suggested carton position and quantity and subjected to the appropriate vibration and compression. Ensure that the bags move, lean or bend on one another. Modify size of pouches, number of cases / dividers.
Do not over-inflate the pouch to prevent settlement unless necessitated by the whole process and product specifications. The product-validated decisions on the packaging atmosphere must be made.
Take the Greater Print Area Purposely.
A 14g pouch provides additional workspace of artwork, which is not a justification to include all the claims. Strengthen hierarchy. Assign product identity, necessary information and opening directions definite places. Draw back variable-code area that is readable and store barcodes off unstable folds.
Any other brand information that is visible in the chosen display can be transported in panels on either the side or the bottom. Apply the same logic of information to the larger SKUs and scale and adjust spacing to the larger format.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should stand-up pouch be the product of choice of every 14g?
No. It is useful in cases where the shelf stability is needed and the gusset fill is opening well. Other distribution and brand plans may be appropriate using flat or flat-bottom structures.
What is the volume of a half-ounce bag of headspace?
Big enough to have the zipper and seal, but not so big as to render the pack unsteady or false. Determine by attempted fill tests.
Should the film of a larger pouch be still thinner?
It might require varying stiffness or durability but thickness is not a specification. Test laminate and complete package.
