What is Rainforest Alliance certification? What are "frog beans"?
Speaking of "frog beans", many people may be unfamiliar with it, because this word is currently very niche and is only mentioned in some coffee beans. Therefore, many people will wonder, what exactly is "frog beans"? Is it describing the appearance of coffee beans? In fact, "frog beans" refer to coffee beans with Rainforest Alliance certification. After obtaining the Rainforest Alliance certification, they will get a logo with a green frog printed on it, so they are called frog beans.
Rainforest Alliance (RA) is a non-profit international non-governmental environmental protection organization. Its mission is to protect biodiversity and achieve sustainable livelihoods by changing land use patterns, business and consumer behavior. At the same time, it is recognized by the International Forest Certification System (FSC). The organization was founded in 1987 by American environmentalist writer, speaker and activist Daniel R. Katz and many environmental supporters. It was originally just to protect the natural resources of the rainforest. Later, as the team grew, it began to get involved in more fields. In 2018, the Rainforest Alliance and UTZ announced their merger. UTZ is a non-profit, non-governmental, independent certification body based on the EurepGAP (European Union Good Agricultural Practice) standard. The certification body will strictly certify all kinds of high-quality coffee in the world, covering every production step from coffee planting to processing. After the coffee production has undergone independent environmental, social and economic audits, UTZ will give the recognized responsible coffee logo.
The new organization after the merger is called "Rainforest Alliance" and will issue certificates to farms and forestry companies that meet comprehensive standards, namely "Rainforest Alliance Certification". Part of the proceeds from the alliance are also used for wildlife protection in tropical rainforest animal reserves and improving workers' lives. According to the current certification standards of the Rainforest Alliance, the standards are composed of three departments: nature conservation, farming methods, and regional society. There are detailed regulations from aspects such as forest protection, water pollution, the working environment of employees, the use of chemical fertilizers, and waste disposal. In short, it is a traditional farming method that does not change the original environment and is planted under the shade of native forests, and is beneficial to protecting the ecology.
Coffee beans are agricultural products, so they can also be evaluated. Only coffee that has passed the evaluation and certification can be called "Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee". The certification is valid for 3 years, during which the Rainforest Alliance logo can be printed on the packaging of coffee beans. In addition to letting people know that the product has been recognized, this logo has great guarantees for the quality of the coffee itself, and the product can have special sales channels and obtain priority. In addition, the Rainforest Alliance logo is also very special. It is not an ordinary frog, but a red-eyed tree frog. This tree frog basically lives in healthy and pollution-free tropical rainforests and is relatively rare. In addition, frogs are one of the commonly used indicators to indicate the degree of environmental pollution. In addition, the original intention of the Rainforest Alliance was to protect tropical rainforests. Therefore, in the second year of the establishment of the alliance, frogs were determined to be used as the standard and have been used to this day.
At present, there are not many "frog beans" with Rainforest Alliance certification, mainly because this has high requirements for the planting environment, and not all coffee farmers will sign up for certification, so it is relatively rare. At Front Street Coffee, the coffee beans that have obtained Rainforest Alliance certification include Diamond Mountain coffee beans from Panama's Emerald Manor and Blue Mountain coffee produced by Clifton Mount in Jamaica. Clifton Mount is currently the only manor in Jamaica with "Rainforest" certification. Front Street Coffee's Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee comes from Clifton Mount. It tastes like nuts and cocoa, with a smooth texture and overall balance.
